From Rangoon to Rajkot: The Inspiring Journey of Vijay Rupani

Born on August 2, 1956 in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, Vijay Ramniklal Rupani rose from humble roots to become one of Gujarat’s prominent political figures. His long and steady career showcased a unique blend of calm leadership and grassroots activism. Sadly, his journey ended on June 12, 2025, in the Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad.

Early Life and Formative Years

The youngest of seven children in a Jain Bania family, Rupani moved to Rajkot in 1960 after political instability in Burma. His father, Rasiklal Rupani, transitioned from grain trading in Burma to a ball bearings business in Gujarat.

Rupani completed a Bachelor of Arts from Dharmendrasinhji Arts College and earned his LL.B. from Saurashtra University. During college, he became active in the RSS and ABVP, which laid the foundation for his political involvement with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

Activism and Political Beginnings

He played a vital role in the Navnirman Andolan in the 1970s. During the Emergency, Rupani was imprisoned for 11 months in Bhuj and Bhavnagar. His formal political journey began in 1987 when he was elected to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation and later became the Mayor from 1996 to 1997.

Progressing Through the Ranks

• 2006–2012: Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat.
• 2014: Elected MLA from Rajkot West.
• 2014–2016: Cabinet Minister under Anandiben Patel for Transport, Labour & Employment, and Water Supply.
• 2016: Became BJP Gujarat State President.

Tenure as Chief Minister

On August 7, 2016, Rupani became the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat, following Anandiben Patel’s resignation. He led Gujarat through a critical phase, forming two cabinets. His second term started after winning the 2017 assembly elections and continued until September 11, 2021, when he stepped down and was succeeded by Bhupendrabhai Patel.

His total tenure as CM lasted 5 years and 37 days, making him the fourth-longest-serving Chief Minister in Gujarat’s history after Narendra Modi.

Rupani was recognized for his calm demeanor, structured decision-making, and emphasis on discipline. His roots in the RSS and ABVP gave him a strong ideological foundation.
